The American war dads was formed in 1942 by a group of 40 men in Kansas City at the suggestion of Nat Milgram whose son was an army captain overseas. They wanted to work together to help their sons and daughters in the armed forces. The American War dads grew to 500 Chapters in 42 states and had a membership of 70,000. The War Dads is a non-partisan,-non-sectarian and non-profit organization.

The Palmyra Chapter #44 was formed In 1971. The Chapter resides at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6778 on Rt 31 in Palmyra. In 1992 the chapter was dedicated To Reginald Ziegler who died on the United States Navy Battleship USS IOWA along with 46 other crewmen in a turret gun explosion on April 19, 1989.
